Healing in a Bigger Picture
Have you ever known someone who got good results for a health problem using some form of alternative therapy? Before I discovered foot reflexology about 18 years ago, I was unaware of the many non-invasive, safe, effective techniques for helping our bodies heal themselves. Most of these treatments get little press. Sometimes a problem can be taken care of with these alternative methods and sometimes it's appropriate to use these methods to complement a conventional approach.
Take acupuncture as an example. This is a thousands-of-years-old system that involves the use of special needles inserted into the skin along certain points for about a half hour or so. The first time I heard about it, it seemed scary, yet I ultimately tried it, with positive results.
Not that acupuncture works for everything, but it is less threatening and invasive than some other procedures. It's a good example of the many options out there. By now, acupuncture has become acceptable to the general public.
Actually, chiropractors have been real pioneers for leading alternative practices into the mainstream. If you remember, it wasn't long ago that chiropractors were considered by some to be suspicious characters! Now almost everyone either sees a chiropractor or knows someone who does. And we are privileged to have some excellent chiropractors making a big difference right here in the Circleville area.
As a profession, massage therapists have also paid their dues in becoming recognized. The massage profession has had to move through the "massage parlor" concept to an appreciation of what the practitioners can actually do. On the surface, it is widely considered merely a "feel-good" therapy, but a therapeutic massage, well-done, has many healing benefits.
I would be surprised if you didn't know someone who has discovered chelation, colonics, Rolfing, acupressure, Reiki, polarity, bee sting therapy, homeopathy, biofeedback, even hypnotherapy. And hypnotherapy is currently in its own "awareness-enhancing" phase, as both mainstream and alternative practitioners are learning of its potential for practical and beneficial results. In fact, some professional hypnotists are now working in partnership with alternative and/or conventional medical practitioners.
The reason is this--suggestions given in hypnotherapy can assist all other treatments in maximizing their effectiveness. The mind can be prepared to accept every process and every healing technique for best possible results with the correct use of hypnotic suggestion.
